Job Description
A city government in Contra Costa County is seeking a strategic, experienced, and licensed Public Works Director / City Engineer to lead its Public Works and Maintenance operations. This executive-level role provides high-level leadership in planning, engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance of city infrastructure and public works services. Reporting directly to the City Manager, the Director oversees departmental staff and contract personnel, manages complex public works programs, and ensures effective coordination across city departments and external agencies.
The ideal candidate is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) with proven municipal public works leadership experience, strong technical engineering expertise, and a collaborative leadership style. You are strategic, solutions-oriented, and highly skilled in budgeting, grant management, and project execution.

Job Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
- At least six (6) years of increasingly responsible public works experience, including a minimum of three (3) years in municipal public works and supervisory responsibilities.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Registered Civil Engineer (P.E.) in the State of California required.
- Valid California Driver s License required or must be obtained upon hire.
- Possession of or ability to obtain California State Pesticide Certificate B & C required for oversight of weed abatement programs.
- Bachelor s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
