Job Description

A government agency in San Mateo County is seeking a motivated and community-focused Assistant Planner to join its Community Development Department.This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience with a wide range of planning initiatives current, long-range, and coastal while contributing to meaningful projects that shape the future of a vibrant and environmentally-conscious community.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Community Development, the Assistant Planner will work on a mix of current and long-range planning efforts. This includes evaluating development proposals, processing permits, drafting reports and ordinances, participating in General Plan and zoning updates, and supporting public engagement efforts. This is a great role for early-career planners who want hands-on experience with CEQA, the California Coastal Act, and a variety of land use issues in a supportive, team-oriented environment.

Job Requirements

Education:
- Bachelor s or advanced degree in urban planning, architecture, geography, public policy, or a closely related field.

Experience:
- Minimum of one year of municipal or regional planning experience.
- Knowledge or experience with CEQA, design review, and coastal planning is a plus.

Skills & Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of California planning laws: CEQA, Coastal Act, Subdivision Map Act, and Planning & Zoning Law.
- Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
- Ability to create clear, compelling staff reports and public-facing materials.
- Comfort with GIS tools, Microsoft Office, and project management platforms.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments with strong organizational skills.
- A collaborative spirit and the ability to work effectively in both office and remote settings.
