A government organization in southern Los Angeles County, CA is looking for an interim Director of Parks and Recreation to fill a vacancy within the Parks and Recreation Division. This is a full-time position working for at least 3+ months and could become temp-to-hire. Compensation is DOE/DOQ.

Plans, organizes and directs the activities of the Community Services Department. Develops, implements and administers multi-year and near-term goals and objectives, as well as policies and procedures necessary to provide quality service.
Advises the City Manager, Assistant City Manager, City Council and Community Services Commission members on matters pertaining to Athletics/Aquatics, Senior Services, Fine Arts, Youth and Family Services, Community Parks and Recreation, Disability Services and Transportation, Animal Care Center, Facility Rentals, Contract Classes, and Customer Service.
Develops the operating budget for the Community Services Department, establishes fees and charges, and administers the expenditures.
Plans, organizes, coordinates and directs through subordinate supervisors the development and implementation of community recreation, leisure, athletics, aquatics, arts, and senior citizens programs and services. Evaluates existing programs to determine effectiveness. Recommends improvement in service delivery.
Oversees the acquisition, development and construction of new park facilities. Oversees the implementation of programs in newly developed community and neighborhood parks. Directs through subordinate supervisors the maintenance of existing parks and related facilities.
Conducts strategic planning for departmental activities, and develops short and long-range goals for park facilities and program functions. Analyzes community needs, including capital facilities planning. Develops and monitors standards and service levels. Allocates staff and resources according to priorities.
Authorizes staff appointments, establishes employee performance standards, implements discipline and prepares performance reviews. Analyzes needs, and develops and implements training programs. Directs and provides guidance to subordinate supervisors, employees, consultants, contractors and work teams.
Works closely with citizen advisory boards, and City and community officials to provide technical assistance and advice. Researches, prepares and presents oral and written reports to City Council, Community Services Commission and other commissions, committees, and boards. Prepares a wide variety of memos, reports and correspondence regarding department activities and operations.
Bachelor s degree in Public Administration, Parks/Recreation Administration, Human Services or related field and eight years of increasingly responsible experience in managing a broad range of recreation and social service programs, and parks planning and development, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Masters degree in Public Administration or Parks/Recreation Administration preferred.
